Stuttering Management Therapy

If you are noticing difficulties with how smoothly you/your child speaks, you may notice the following issues:

Girl in Therapy
Does this sound like you or your child?
  • Their speech may have these characteristics:

    • Repetitions: repeat parts of words ("I-I-I want ice cream")

    • Prolongations: stretching a sound out for a long time ("ssssssssssssssyrup, please")

    • Blocks: having a hard time getting a word out ("M-----int chocolate")

  • You get tension in your face/neck when you get stuck on sounds/words

  • You may notice your child shying away or avoiding ordering food at restaurants/not ordering what they actually like to eat

  • You may avoid certain words because it has a sound that you stutter on frequently

  • You may notice your child "using" their "body" to "get the words out" (i.e., eye blinks, head nodding, leg slapping, etc.)

Next Steps: Stuttering Evaluation & Therapy

A comprehensive evaluation is required to begin therapy. An assessment typically takes 1 - 1.5 hours, where we speak with the individual and discuss emotions/behavior associated with stuttering and we discuss best treatment plan for the individual. Following the assessment, we will discuss the detailed written report with the findings, recommendations, and treatment plan--if treatment is recommended.

Therapy is individualized for every client; in therapy, similar topics are discussed with every client: speech mechanism, stuttering management strategies, and/or famous people who stutter, etc.

At Lumaki Speech & Myo Therapy, we understand that stuttering is a life-long speech characteristic with many social-emotional issues attached to stuttering. We strongly believe that counseling and addressing the social-emotional issues of the individual along with family support--in conjunction with the treatment plan listed above--individuals have the most success with managing their stutter.

If you notice you or your child/adolescent is having these difficulties contact us today to schedule a consultation/evaluation.
